Kids in Preschool

SJ Play

Our Mission

SJ Play strives to bridge the gap from preschool to kindergarten particularly in the area of social/emotional learning and development. The group is intended to best prepare your preschooler to manage the increased social demands of the school-based kindergarten environment, especially in light of the strict social restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Program Description

SJ Play is a summer skills group for children entering kindergarten. Over a 6 week period, the group will meet 2 times per week for 75 minute sessions, beginning the week of July 6th, and running through August 13th (12 sessions in total). In order to promote individualized attention, our group will be capped at 4 students.

SJ Play will emphasize improving critical play and social skills; this includes sharing, turn-taking, inviting and joining in a play activity, and transitioning from a preferred activity to a less preferred activity. Sessions will incorporate a greeting and goodbye circle, center play, game board play, an academic based activity, a gross motor activity, and snack time.

Our Staff

The group will be facilitated by an experienced Licensed Masters in Social Work, with the support of a classroom aide. Our group leader Michele Sevigny, LMSW, brings several years of experience working with preschoolers, as well as Early Intervention clients and their families. Her practice focus has been a play therapy approach to developing healthy social emotional skills.

  • Participants must be entering a general education kindergarten classroom in the Fall, and have either had an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) in the preceding preschool year or have demonstrated a deficiency in their social skills.

  • Children participating in an IEP Special Education program for the Summer or Fall would not be eligible.

  • Participants will need to be able to take care of their own toileting needs, including washing their hands.

  • Parents will be expected to provide their child with a healthy snack, and a pencil case including crayons, glue stick, child scissors, and a pencil.

  • There will be appropriate COVID-19 protocols in place.

To Enroll

In order to determine if our group is appropriate for your child, there will be an intake process that will include a short screening. This is a private pay social group and due to our limited number of spaces, we ask that tuition be paid in advance. We will not be able to pro-rate or credit tuition for missed classes.

Please contact Angela Mertens at or 845-827-6227 x101 regarding rates and intake information.
